Welcome to Safe Start

“The beginning is the most important part of the work.”

Plato

First off, welcome! If you’ve had several false starts trying to use exercise to relieve back pain I want to acknowledge how hard it can be to try again and how honoured I am that you’re willing to explore my approach.  You’re truly a resourceful and committed person, and these are the qualities that will get you to where you want to be!

If I may, I’d like to suggest an intention to explore as you go through this mini course.  Let how you move throughout your day be your medicine and not a punishment for the ‘bad’ parts of your lifestyle.

In the same way that a wilting houseplant doesn’t need to be fixed, but rather nurtured and cared for via its environment (sunlight, moisture, fertilizer etc), so too does an anxious mind and achy body need an environment that includes little doses of healing movement and muscle engagements.  The house plant isn’t a ‘bad’ plant - it just isn’t having it’s needs met.  It’s not the plant's fault, nor is it your fault, that you’re in pain either.

Now, I’m not talking about hours of exercise classes a day, but regular use of little techniques and patterns that your body is craving to help it thrive!  One possible mantra to repeat to yourself might be:

“What I do everyday matters more than what I do once and a while” - Gretchen Rubin

This mini course is about starting to change the way you move and think about movement throughout your day in a way that will nurture a sensitive back and ultimately change your life over time. But knowing how to start and maintain this kind of change can be overwhelming.

So, let’s start by making and keeping small daily promises to yourself to work on your movement, movement education and habits over time.  Be compassionate with yourself and start to practice being ok with not being perfect at this stuff right away.  Think practice makes progress, not perfection. Our goal is to habitualize daily action at this point!

I admire the courage it takes to get yourself out of pain and face your fears and I promise to never use blame or shame to motivate you.  It’s not your fault you’re in pain, and you can learn valuable tools to help free yourself from it!

Just start today by watching the full video, then celebrate how you took an action toward healing! You can do this. These lessons will show you how!

Let me know how it goes and if you have any questions.

With love and respect,

Garrett
